Film Festival

Welcome to Artslink 2007-2008

Artslink is an innovative arts-based project, funded by the EU Peace and Reconciliation Programme. The project uses the medium of drama and filmmaking to develop relationships between different identity groups within Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.

Artslink Big Screen Debut

On 2 October at the Queens Film Theatre Belfast a unique film festival took place which celebrated and showcased the work of Artslink students. The was the big screen debut for the young people representing the 2006-2007 participating Artslink schools and in total 18 films were shown. During the partnered schools second exchange ten music videos were made and these short films reflected the issues that are common to young people on both sides of the border, teenage bullying, HIV and alcohol/drug abuse. In a though provoking manner, the young people addressed these concerns in their films. The films were inspired by music from a range of artists including Snow Patrol, Mika, Gary Jules and others.

A further eight documentaries were also screened and each of these told the story of each partner’s community as seen through the eyes of the young people. The students were assisted by professional filmmakers and actors who guided, encouraged and supported them to develop their creative skills, thereby enabling them to produce work worthy of the big screen.

Speaking at the event the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure Mr. Edwin Poots said: “This is an excellent project and a great way to encourage young people to be more creative and get involved in filmmaking. There are many viable career options in the creative industries and schemes like this offer people the opportunity to explore their potential. Through the medium of film, pupils have been able to produce something they can all be proud of and I am hopeful that this cross-border initiative will continue to grow in strength”.

Teachers and members of school management also attended the event in Queen’s to show their support and mark the achievements of the students involved in the Artslink project. Co-operation Ireland’s Chief Executive, Tony Kennedy said “Through this project we have been able to channel the creativity and energy of our young people in a very positive and constructive manner. Using the latest technology these young adults have explored how people in our society view one another. By having a better understanding of each other’s cultures real progress on the road to reconciliation is made”.
