All–Island Leisure and Sport Report Launched
Today Co-operation Ireland’s All Island Local Authority Forum launched ‘Playing fair: the role of sport and leisure in our lives’ – a collection of articles relating to current and potential sporting events, recreation and arts and cultural issues facing Local Authorities on the island of Ireland. The aim of the publication is to highlight examples of good practice across cross-cutting theme such as planning, healthy living, anti-social behaviour and community development. It is hoped that the publication will stimulate further discussion and debate from local authorities on an all-island basis. The papers specifically addressed the topics of:
- Arts, Culture and Local Government
- Sport and Leisure – Accessibility and Participation
- Sport and social issues
- Sport – Building Community Cohesion and Capacity
- The Changing Scene of Leisure Provision and Management
The publication was launched by Thomas Madigan of Director of Sports Academy International during a Local Authority Forum workshop. The Forum is a partnership of representatives from the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) and County and City Managers’ Association (CCMA). It’s remit is to formalize relationships and encourage strategic sustainable approaches to cross-border co-operation. The workshop was an opportunity for the forum members to discuss the current economic climate and governance and policy making issues relating to the provision of sport and leisure facilities. The booklet can be downloaded here.
