2004 Anne Maguire Student Journalism Conference
The 2004 Anne Maguire Student Journalism Conference took place at the Linenhall Library in Belfast. It’s theme was ‘Moving Towards Reconciliation: Does the Media Have a Role?’
It was addressed by Benjamin Pogrund, former Editor of the Mail and Guardian newspaper in Johannesburg. During his career he was jailed for refusing to disclose the identity of informants. Prof Govin Reddy, who was active in the anti-apartheid movement and is currently Visiting Professor at Rhodes University presented his experiences about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. Other speakers were Alan McBride from the Healing Through Remembering project and Kevin Cooper, an activist with the National Union of Journalists.
The 2004 Anne Maguire Student Journalism Award was presented to Jennifer May, for her article which was seen as contributing to an understanding between different cultures on the island of Ireland.
